Maya Kensington Ertter
Born 4/25/17 @ 5:28pm
7lbs 2oz, 20 inches long
Since it’s been a month, I guess it’s time to officially write a little something about our newest addition! Miss Maya Kensington Ertter entered the world at 5:28pm on Tuesday, April 25th. I was 40 weeks and 3 days overdue, so I chose to have an induction. I know many people probably disagree with this and wouldn’t chose to have an elected induction but I was ready and I knew baby was ready too… my body just needed that extra push. I wasn’t as nervous about it since I was induced with Grayson as well, so I really do believe it was the best choice for us.
Since it was an elected induction and I wasn’t officially a week late yet, there was no guarantee when we’d be called into the hospital. It all depended on how much room they had. We were told there was a chance we’d be called in on Monday (5/24), so I started my Maternity leave and Kyle took off and we sat around waiting for a phone call. Around 11am, I got a call from the nurse with news that they would not be able to bring me in that day. Honestly, I was devastated. I had emotionally prepared myself to deliver her that day and for 4/24 to be her birthday and now that wasn’t going to happen. I cried…. a lot. Eventually, I got myself together and figured everything happens for a reason and went to the gym instead (ha). I walked on the treadmill for an hour until my legs felt like they were going to fall off….. but still no labor.
Tuesday morning came and around 8:30am, the nurse called and said they were still pretty busy but she’d give me a call by 11am to let me know if we could come in. The waiting was legit killing me. At 9:20am, I got another call and heard the words “do you want to have a baby today?” I let out a little scream, turned to Kyle and said “we are having a baby today!” They wanted us in by 10am and for the first time in our lives, we were RIGHT on time. Literally, we arrived at the nurses station in the hospital at 10am, exactly. The nurse was like “wow, you guys are prompt” LOL. We followed her down to the delivery room where we’d be spending the rest of the day. They hooked me up to IV’s to start running fluids and the Pitocin. I told them that with our first baby, my body didn’t really respond/dilate until my water was broken, so they ran the fluids for about an hour and then the doctor came in and broke my water.
After my water broke, just like before, the contractions started coming on stronger. Around 12pm, the nurse checked my dilation and I was at 4cm. The contractions weren’t too bad at this point but since I knew I was getting an epidural anyway, I asked if we could give the anesthesiologist a call to get the ball rolling on that. Why wait to be in complete agony before getting it, am I right? By 2:30 pm, the epidural was in but I was still only 4cm dilated. I was getting a little nervous that I was too quick with the pain medicine and that it was going to slow down labor but I just crossed my fingers and hoped my body would continue to do what it needed to do. The last thing I wanted was a c-section. The nurse came in around 4pm and let me know that I was only 5cm but we’d continue to wait and let my body do it’s thing. At 5pm, she came in again and I half expected her to say “Oh boy, you’re still at 5cm” but instead she looks at me and says “ready to push?!” with a huge grin on her face. I gave a little yelp and said “I’m 10cm already?!?!” I had dilated 5cm in an hour. Phew, glad I didn’t feel any of that.
The nurses got me all set up and and three pushes later, Maya was out! I couldn’t believe how quick she came (literally like 3 minutes) since I pushed with Grayson for 2 hours. Kyle cut the umbilical cord and she was placed on my chest right away. She had a full head of dark brown hair, which is exactly how I pictured her. She’s my mini me!
Everything seemed so much quicker and much less scarier the second time around. We weren’t so nervous holding her/changing her diapers and I wasn’t as concerned with my recovery since I kind of new what to expect. Since I was recovering well and she passed all her 24 hour tests, I requested an early release. We were released after one day in the hospital. I did this because Kyle had to go home to be with Grayson and I wanted to be at home with my support system rather than in the hospital by myself, getting no sleep because someone is coming into our room every 20 minutes.
Another requirement of our early release was that we schedule an appointment with the pediatrician the next day, so we went in Thursday morning. She went from 7lbs 2oz (at birth) to 6lbs 10oz 2 days later, so our pediatrician had us come in again on Friday just to make sure she didn’t lose anymore weight. My milk was slowly coming in, so at the Friday appointment she weighed 6lbs 11oz, which put our pediatrician at ease. At her 2 week appointment she had shot up to 7lbs 15oz and everyone was thrilled! I can’t wait to see how much she weighs at her one month appointment. She’s definitely getting chunkier since her newborn outfits are getting a bit snug!
Big brother Grayson is the best big brother we could have asked for. He loves her so much (but not too much) and gives her kisses and pats her tummy. When she cries or wines he goes “shhhh, it’s okay Maya”. It’s the cutest, ever. He does seem to be demanding a bit more attention lately but we were prepared for that. Overall, things are going well with our transition to two kids! We couldn’t be more blessed to have two beautiful, healthy children and I am so lucky to have had two smooth and healthy pregnancies and deliveries.
Since I am a little behind on her updates – here are her 1, 2 and 3 week photos :)
