Mallory wrote a great post on what she packed for the hospital versus what she actually used and I thought I’d do the same because I was kind of in the same boat as she was when it came to over packing. I read so many blogs about all the things you should have with you “just in case” and although they were great suggestions, for my delivery, I definitely didn’t need half the stuff I brought with me.
If you remember I posted a while back on what was in my hospital bag.
I actually changed my bags around a little bit a couple days before we went to the hospital so I only had one bag for me and then Grayson’s diaper bag with all of his stuff in it. Then Kyle had his own bag of his stuff.
I stayed in the hospital gown they gave me the entire time I was there until we were discharged. So here is what I actually used.
Going Home Outfit – A nursing bra, I wore a regular tank top, a kimono to throw over that, yoga pants and sandals.
Journal – I actually did write in this in the beginning when things were slow on Monday night to Tuesday. However, once things started picking up it was much easy to take short notes on my phone of times, stats, feelings, etc.
Wallet – Of course I had this with all our insurance information, license and so on.
Makeup Bag & Toiletries – I used pretty much everything in this. I didn’t shower when I was there but I used dry shampoo in my hair to keep it fresh looking and I put on makeup a couple hours after Grayson was born. I felt like a new person once I did that. It’s crazy how much a little make up and brushing your hair can do for a person.
Lanolin Nipple Cream & Pads – This was a lifesaver when I started breast feeding. It hurts. That’s all I can say.
Two Pillows – One pillow for me and one for Kyle. The hospital pillows weren’t that bad but they only gave me two and I definitely wanted more than that. I surrounded my hurting body with those things and it was nice having my own.
One Blanket – For Kyle to use overnight.
Camera – We charged it before we left for the hospital so it never died on us.
Computers & Chargers – We did use these when we had some down time waiting for my body to do it’s thing.
Phone Chargers – Definitely used these with all the calls and photo uploading we were doing!
Snacks – We took a couple of protein bars but I ate the hospital food for the most part (which was pretty darn good actually) and my parents brought us some food when they came to visit.
Nurse treats – They loved the candy I brought them. They were so thankful!
Going home outfit for Grayson – He wore his diaper, a onsie the hospital gave him and the blanket they used while we were there but we used one outfit (newborn) when we left.
Swaddle Blanket – We also used our own swaddle blanket when we left.
Car Seat – Obviously already set up and ready to go in the car!
Things we did not use: all 3 nursing bras & tanks, slippers (I spent the majority of the time in bed), maxi pads (I used what the hospital provided until we got home), hair dryer & straightener, birth plan, baby book (I filled it out when we got home and we did his own footprints with ink pads they let us take home), list of important phone numbers, sheets, flip flops (I wore the sandals I came in wearing), robe.
Maybe I didn’t overpack too bad but I definitely took advantage of what the hospital offered much more than I thought I would!
